Internship Program Overview
The internship program is open to campus-based students only. ASU Online students may apply for the BIS internship program by contacting the instructor of the BIS 484 course.
Program Details
The internship program has two main components:
- Students complete an internship with an approved organization (number of hours depends on credit hours).
- Students complete assignments in an online course, designed to build career knowledge and skills. There are no in-person class meetings.
Internships consist of supervised field experiences and are available to qualified upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. Internships provide an opportunity to apply communication skills in a professional setting and to gain insight through practical experience.
- Up to six credit hours are available. The first three credits (COM 484) receive a letter grade; the second three credits receive "Y" credit.
- 160 hours = 3 credits; 320 hours = 6 credits.
- COM 484 is an online course with no face-to-face meetings.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the internship program, students must:
- Be a declared Communication major.
- Have at least a 2.00 GPA.
- Have completed a minimum of 56 credit hours.
- Have completed COM 207, COM 225, and COM 308 with a grade of "C" (2.00) or better.
- Submit a completed application before the semester deadline. Applications are reviewed only by the internship coordinator and director.
Internship opportunities are shared through the program’s Blackboard site. Students are responsible for securing their own internship placements. Please note that placement is not guaranteed.
Application Information
Download the Student Application Packet, complete it, and deliver it to the main communication office (Stauffer Hall, A412). You will be notified by email after the deadline regarding your admission status.
Plan ahead — late applications will not be accepted. A new application must be submitted for every semester you wish to participate. If you applied previously but did not complete an internship, you must reapply.
Application Deadlines
- Spring semester: September 15 – October 15 (by 5:00 p.m.)
- Summer session: March 15 – April 15 (by 5:00 p.m.)
- Fall semester: June 15 – July 15 (by 5:00 p.m.)
Note: If the 15th falls on a weekend, the deadline is extended to 5:00 p.m. on the next business day.
Finding an Internship
Internship duties must clearly align with the skills and knowledge of a Communication major. Interns and mentors should work together to ensure that the position meets program requirements, as outlined on the Information for Sponsors page in Blackboard.
Resources for locating internships include:
- Sun Devil CareerLink: A platform for internships and post-graduation job opportunities.
- Finding an internship independently: If your desired organization is not listed, direct your sponsor to the Information for Sponsors page.
Important: Sponsors must submit their application at least 5 weeks before the semester begins. All internships are subject to approval, and certain types of positions may be declined.
