Summer Study Abroad Communication Programs

London, Dublin, Edinburgh

The Human Communication summer study abroad program is one of the most popular faculty-directed programs at ASU. We offer students a unique opportunity to study communication in different cultural contexts while providing them with opportunities to see plays in London’s West End, enjoy the countryside of Ireland, and learn about the castles and kilts of romantic and very cosmopolitan Edinburgh.

London’s many celebrated historical sites include Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and Trafalgar Square. Its museums and galleries feature world-class collections, and its theater companies are among the finest in the world.

Dublin

Founded in the Middle Ages by Viking raiders, Dublin has played a major role in Ireland’s rich and complex history. Today, it is the country’s largest city and a thriving center for education and the arts. Notable landmarks include:

Belle A. Edson Study Abroad Scholarship

Named in honor of longtime faculty member Dr. Belle Edson, this scholarship supports undergraduate Communication majors participating in the Hugh Downs School’s summer study abroad program in England, Ireland, and Scotland.

Dr. Edson led the program from 2000 to 2025, shaping transformational student experiences through immersive coursework, cultural site visits, and global communication training. Her legacy of mentorship and cross-cultural engagement lives on through this scholarship, which helps make international education more accessible to future Sun Devils.

Eligibility Requirements

This program is open to all students who have completed COM 100, pending approval by the faculty director.

Costs

  • 6 COM credit hours
  • Roundtrip airfare to Dublin and Edinburgh (transatlantic flights not included)
  • Local transportation (London tube, Dublin and Edinburgh bus passes)
  • All housing and airport transfers
  • 3 plays in London, museum visits, and cultural tours in all three cities
  • Day trips to the West of Ireland and Wicklow Mountains
  • Personal expenses: meals (breakfast included in Edinburgh), entertainment, extra travel

Housing

  • London: Student housing in Kensington
  • Dublin: Campus apartments at University College Dublin (with kitchen)
  • Edinburgh: Campus housing at University of Edinburgh (breakfast included)
  • Wi-Fi available in all three cities
