School alum awarded MacArthur 'Genius' Fellowship

Matthew Desmond

Matthew Desmond, Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Studies at Harvard University, was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, commonly known as a “Genius Grant.” Desmond was one of 24 recipients of the 5-year grant which provides $625,000 to further his or her work.

Desmond was a double major in Communication (B.S.) and Justice Studies (B.S.), graduating from ASU in 2002. He received an M.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2010) from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and was a Junior Fellow at the Society of Fellows at Harvard University (2010­–2013) before joining the faculty of Harvard’s Department of Sociology in 2012.
