Public Speaking Contest

What is it?

It is a department-wide public speaking contest for students currently enrolled in any COM class (limit 2 students per class section). Students can present any 4-8 minute speech related to course content. The finals round will be open to the public and students can receive extra credit for attending and voting for the winners.

When is it?

The contest will be held from 5-8:30 pm on Monday, November 20th, 2017. Here is a breakdown of the event:

5:15 pm – Volunteer judges arrive to judge prelim rounds

5:30 – 6:30 pm  – Preliminary Round

7:00 – 8:30 pm – Finals Round in COOR L1-74

Why is this an Important Project?

  1. This is good for the department—increases departmental visibility on campus, and allows us to show off our student’s work
  2. This is good for the students—the finalists get to shine, it gives students the opportunity to see great speeches by their peers, and it is fun for those who enjoy competition.
  3. This is good for the instructors and professors – we get to see our students excel, we get to join together and celebrate achievement, and we get to show others what we taught our students (bragging rights go to the winner’s instructor).
