Biography

Gino Giannini is originally from Northern California. He received his bachelor's and master's in communication studies from San Diego State University. His master's thesis research was on bereaved parents. He interviewed couples about the ways that communicative behaviors support and hurt parents following the loss of a child. At Arizona State University, he has focused his research on recovery from trauma in interpersonal, family, and organizational relationships, as well as loss in health organizations. He primarily conducts research via qualitative methods, such as interviewing and ethnographic fieldwork.

While at ASU, he has studied at a hospice organization, siblings that grew up in an alcoholic home, college student eating behaviors and written about mater narratives within communication research and the challenges of qualitative methods. His dissertation research examines social support in work-life relationships following the loss of a loved one by interviewing the principle bereaved individual and then someone from their home-life as well as their organizational life. He has taught a number of classes but generally focuses on qualitative research methods, communication theory, organizational communication, public speaking, family/relational communication, and small group communication.
