Corey attended a small liberal arts college in Nebraska, majoring in mathematics and minoring in communications studies. He competed for Hastings College forensics team for four years and had competitive success in national quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds. This propelled him to pursue communication studies for a Master's degree at Kansas State University. There he taught public speaking, assisted with the forensics team, and conducted research in organizational communication and critical disability studies. Corey then taught at the University of Nebraska-Kearney for two years, teaching numerous communication courses while volunteering his time coaching high school speech. In the Hugh Downs School, his research focuses on expanding a microaggression research program (MRP) through post-qualitative and quantitative inquiry and re-tooling current traditional communication methodologies through pure and applied mathematics.
