2014 Hugh Downs School Award Recipients

The Scholarship, fellowship, and award recipients in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication were guests of honor on April 28 in the Heritage Room of the University Club on the Tempe campus for the annual awards and recognition reception. Scholarship and fellowship donors were also recognized for their continued support of the school.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Several merit-based scholarships were awarded to Hugh Downs School undergraduate students for the 2014-2015 academic year:

House of Broadcasting, Inc. donors with Susana ValenzuelaSusana R. Valenzuela was awarded the House of Broadcasting, Inc. Endowed Scholarship. The House of Broadcasting, Inc., was represented by Mary Morrison, Maurie Helle, John and Lelis Craft, Jack and Beverly Clifford.

 

 

Dr. Norman Perrill and Craig StuartThe second annual Norman K. Perrill Scholarship was awarded to Craig K. Stuart. The recipient of this award must be pursuing a degee in group communication, organizational communication, or a related program of study associated with the Center for Strategic Communication.

 

Moises Serrano and Jofrin Lee PezzatiThe Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Scholars Program Scholarships were awarded to Moises Serrano and Jofrin Lee Pezzati. Anna Marie Franko was also awarded the Human Communication Scholars Program Scholarship, but was unable to attend the reception.

 

Frankie Marchi and Dr. Kristin Bervig ValentineFrankie William Marchi was awarded the Kristin Bervig Valentine Undergraduate Scholarship in Performance Studies. This endowed scholarship was established by former ASU performance studies professor, Kristin Bervig Valentine, and is awarded to an undergraduate student who has excelled in performance studies classes and made significant contributions to the study of performance through creative activity, scholarship, and/or community service.

Dr. Belle Edson, undergraduate studies directorThe following undergraduate student award recipients were unable to attend the reception, but were recognized at the reception by Dr. Bell Edson:

Allyse Marie Johnson was awarded the Louis and Louise Menk Endowed Scholarship.
Rohit Subramananiam Rajan was awarded the Robert and Sue Karatz Forensics Endowed Scholarship.
Claudia Francisca Hub was awarded the William and Teeny Drakos Endowed Scholarship.
Maureen Luc was awarded the Alexander and Vivian Gentleman Endowed Scholarship.
Judith Bracamonte was awarded the Rusty and Rosie Lyon Endowed Scholarship
Benjamin Grant Findlay was awarded the Barnes Pharr Endowed Scholarship.

Bailey Wigness was awarded the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Medal.

This medal was created by Dean Robert E. Page, Jr. of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to recognize the top graduating student in each of the degree-granting schools and departments in the college.”

Graduate Fellowships and Awards

Jennifer Linde with Louise ClarkArtistic director Jennifer Linde presented the following Performance Studies awards:

Louise Clark was awarded the Dessie E. Larsen Graduate Fellowship in Performance Studies. This endowed fellowship was established in 1986 by Janet Larsen Palmer and her husband, Neal Palmer, in memory of Janet’s mother, Dessie E. Larsen, to honor a distinguished graduate student in performance studies whose performance scholarship stands out as exceptional.

Michelle Hill and Jennifer LindeMichelle Hill was presented with the Recognition of Sustained Innovation in Creative Activity award. This award is given to a doctoral student who has demonstrated sustained involvement in creative scholarship that demonstrates one or more of the following: innovate methods, positive scholarship, embodied knowledge, and work that is “Out of the Box.” It is given by the initiative for Innovative Inquiry and The Empty Space.

Christine Duff Muldoon and Lisa van RaalteThe Christine Duff Muldoon Communication Fellowship was presented to Lisa van Raalte. The recipient of this award has been deemed likely to make important contributions to the communication discipline.

Luke Brenneman, Dr. Jess Alberts, and Margaret BrooksPresident's Professor Jess Alberts presented the Jeanne Lind Herberger Fellowships in Communication to Margaret Brooks and Luke Brenneman. This fellowship recognizes contributions to both conflict transformation and work-life issues.

 

 

Lisa van RaalteThe Hugh Downs Outstanding Research Award was presented to first-year doctoral student Lisa van Raalte. Doctoral student Roberta Chevrette received the Hugh Downs School Superior Research Award. These awards recognize prolific scholarship contributions to the discipline including journal articles, conference paper presentations, and conference top paper awards.

 

Dr. Anthony Roberto with Megan FiskDoctoral student Megan Fisk was the awarded the Hugh Downs School Ph.D. Student Service Award in recognition of her excellent and sustained contributions to the Hugh Downs School, the University, and the communication discipline. Megan is also the current president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

 

Benjamin WiedmaierBenjamin Wiedmaier, doctoral student, received the Hugh Downs School Outstanding Teaching award. This award recognizes creative course development, excellent classroom teaching skills, and mentorship of undergraduate students.

Lori Bednarchik, Tara Franks, Trisha Hoffman, and Mark GenerousDoctoral students Lori Bednarchik and Trisha Hoffman were awarded the Exceptional CGSA Liaison awards and Versha Anderson was recognized for Outstanding Contributions to CGSA and the HDSHC.
