AHC Student and Professor Social

The first social event of the year will be held at the Fall Festival on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 pm on Palo Verde Beach. This event is hosted in conjunction with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and will include lots of food, games and prizes. All leaders and professors will be dressed up for Halloween in Wild West Fashion so come network, eat, laugh and make valuable connections for your future! Socials are an excellent opportunity for AHC members to build beneficial relationships with The Hugh Downs School staff, faculty and students.

Interactive Internship and Study Abroad Information Sessions

 

The Hugh Downs School will host an Interactive Internship and Study Abroad Information Session on Thursday, October 8, 2009. The coordinator of The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication internship program will be available to give insight into the application process and will provide helpful hints that will allow you to earn COM credit during your internship. Keep in mind internship applications are due October 15, 2009 so it is imperative that you attend this session if you are interested in obtaining and internship for the spring 2010 semester!

 

Also, did you know the Hugh Downs School has its own study abroad program? If you are interested in exploring England, Scotland and Ireland and more while taking COM classes come to our session. The coordinator will be present to provide guidance and answer any questions you may have. Our AHC vice president will be sharing pictures and stories from her study abroad experience. We encourage you to find out more about this unique opportunity.

Hugh Downs Convocation Speaker at The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Ceremonies

 

Hugh Downs, namesake of The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at ASU, was the convocation speaker at the Maroon and Gold Ceremonies for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Mr. Downs career has spanned over 50 years as an investigative journalist, television host, and author. He remains actively involved with ASU students and faculty as a guest lecturer for undergraduate and graduate levels. To read the complete article on the Liberal Arts and Sciences convocation. The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication to Host the
Western States Communication Association National Convention

 

The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at ASU will serve as the host school for the Western States Communication Association (WSCA) National Convention on February 13-17, 2009 in Mesa, Arizona. WSCA, founded in 1929, is a not-for-profit educational association of scholars, teachers, and students of communication with over 1,000 members not only from the western states but from all parts of the United States and countries around the world.

 

President-Elect Dan Canary and the Interest Group Program Planners have built this year's convention around the theme "Mixing Metaphors", which will show different ways to communicate with each other from different perspectives using various theoretic and methodological languages. The Keynote Address will be presented by Mr. Hugh Downs. This year's convention offers two Pre-Conferences, Six Workshops, and Graduate Student Workshops.

 

President-Elect Daniel Canary is a Professor with The Hugh Downs School. He has authored or co-authored 10 books and over 70 articles and scholarly book chapters. Dan's research interests include conversational argument, conflict communication, relational maintenance strategies, and sex differences and similarities in communication. Dan is a former President of the International Network on Personal Relationships and is currently a member of 11 editorial boards. He has also served as Editor of the Western Journal of Communication from 2002-2005.

 

Paul Mongeau, Professor with The Hugh Downs School, is the Local Host for the Convention. Dr. Mongeau and Dr. Canary are assisted by Kendra Knight, Convention Coordinator and doctoral student with The Hugh Downs School.
