Graduate Students Awarded Research Grant Funding
The following graduate students with The Hugh Downs School have been selected as recipents of the Graduate Research Support Program grant funding for their doctoral student projects from the ASU Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Affairs under the auspices of the Graduate and Professional Student Association:
Jennifer Eden - (Independent Research Award) "Health Outcomes of Unrequited Attraction"
Kendra Rivera -(Dissertation Award) "Burnout & Emotion at the U.S. Border Patrol"
Karen Stewart - (Dissertation Award, Dissertation Database Development) "From Ritual to Spectacle: Public Art and the Burning Man Festival"
Matt Savage and Jennifer Scarduzio - (Independent Research Award) "Female Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence"

The Hugh Downs School Faculty and Graduate Students Take Top Awards
at the National Communication Association 2009 Convention
The Hugh Downs School interpersonal faculty and graduate students take the top research awards at the 2009 National Communication Association convention which will be held in Chicago, IL on November 12-15.

Kory Floyd, professor, is the recipient of the Gerald R. Miller Book Award for Communicating Affection: Interpersonal Behavior and Social Context (2006, Cambridge University Press). Artemio Ramirez, Jr., assistant professor, is the co-recipient of the Franklin H. Knower Article Award for their article, "When online meets offline: The effect of modality switching on relational communication," published in Communication Monographs, 74, 287-310.

The annual Gerald R. Miller Book Award and the Franklin H. Knower Article Award represent the most important honors the interpersonal communication division can bestow on its members. These awards acknowledge research that has made, or offers promise of, significant contributions to scholarship in interpersonal communication. Recipients of each award are honored during the division's business meeting as well as during the following year's convention with a session dedicated to each award winning selection.

In addition, Professor Floyd, doctoral student Perry Pauley, and doctoral alumn Colin Hesse earned the Top Paper Award in the interpersonal communication division for their study, "Writing affectionate letters alleviates stress: Replication and extension."

Linda Lederman Presented Prestigious Social and Behavioral Sciences Award
Dean Linda Costigan Lederman, professor with The Hugh Downs School,is the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Rutgers Graduate School-New Brunswick Alumni Award for Distinguished Accomplishments and Service in the Social and Behavioral Sciences. This award recognizes the many broad-ranging contributions of Dean Lederman's innovative, integrated, and use-inspired teaching and research, administrative leadership, and service to the discipline, the academy, and the community.

Steve Corman Recipient of 2009 ICA Award
Steve Corman, professor with The Hugh Downs School, and the Consortium for Strategic Communication are recipients of the 2009 ICA Outstanding Applied or Public Research award at the annual convention in Chicago on May 21. The award was presented to Dr. Corman and CSC by the International Communication Association for their contributions to the scholarship of the global struggle against extremism.

Kory Floyd Appointed Associate Director of The Hugh Downs School
The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication would like to announce Dr. Kory Floyd as the new associate director of the school. Dr. Floyd's research focuses on the communication of affection in personal relationships, and on the interplay between communication, physiology and health.

Angela Trethewey Appointed Director of The Hugh Downs School
The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication would like to announce Angela Trethewey, associate professor, as the new director of the school. We would like to congratulate Dr. Trethewey on her appointment as the new director effective July 1, 2009. We would also like to thank Bud Goodall, professor, for his term as the previous director.
