NPR Interview on Public Displays of Male Affection
In February 2009, Dr. Kory Floyd and his co-author, Dr. Mark Morman from Baylor University, were interviewed on a national radio call-in program on NPR called Radio Times. The relational communication experts were asked to explain the rise of public displays of male affection in our contemporary culture. Many commentators have remarked recently that President Obama is much more prone to hug other men than his predecessors. Drs. Floyd and Morman remind us that President Obama is not alone in his willingness to give or receive affection. The researchers explain that changing gender roles, parenting expectations, and familial relationships have created greater possibilities for men to express themselves through affection. Dr. Floyd's research demonstrates that affection, expressed appropriately, positively impacts our emotional, psychological and physiological health. If you would like to hear more about this fascinating interview, you may do so by listening to the NPR podcast.
