Hugh Downs, one of the most familiar figures in the history of television, is an exemplar of the well-rounded communicator. He has been a role model for communication effectiveness to the American public for more than 50 years. The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication was named in his honor.
Study Abroad students

Summer Study Abroad
Each summer between 25 to 35 students venture off to Ireland and the British Isles with two or three faculty members. Students affirm that travelling abroad changes their lives and broadens their understanding of communication and the contexts that surround our communication.
Angela Trethewey

our Director
Angela Trethewey came to ASU in 1996 and became director of The Hugh Downs School in 2009. She is the author of several journal articles, white papers and two books. “This is one of the most exciting times in our school’s history and I am honored to be part of such a dynamic school.” says Trethewey.

Dr. Kory Floyd

Kory Floyd
Dr. Floyd serves as the school's Associate Director and Director of our Communication Sciences Laboratory. He received the 2011 National Communication Association’s Woolbert Research Award for outstanding scholarship and was named 2010 Outstanding Doctoral Mentor by the Graduate College.

Through the study and critique of human communication, we generate knowledge, creativity, and understanding to facilitate healthy relationships and workplaces, civil and secure communities; and constructive intercultural interaction.

Our areas of teaching emphasis in The Hugh Downs School are: Intercultural Communication and Cultural Studies, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication, Performance Studies, Rhetoric and Public Communication. Our exciting research program features several new strategic initiatives: Health Communication, Conflict Transformation, Project for Wellness and Work-Life, Center for Strategic Communication, and Innovative Inquiry.
